Still building up my cache of parts. I have 416-16Z, and plan to go the opposite
direction. Per a few chats I have seen, and logical to me. A cabinet 5-5.5^3.
With the ability to, eventually adding a second pair. And fill the bottom with 2 or
3 small subs. I have 2 agendas here. Tightening up a near perfect range of a
great mid speaker. Plus,since a lifelong apt. dweller. The ability to add or lose
the bottom as I please.

This would be my preference also, but it didn't seem within the 'spirit' of the query.

The 360 Onken was what the 'C' owner wanted, so we built it, but I was underwhelmed overall, so we tried a MLTL, which we thought was subjectively better overall, but the best was a relatively high tuned TL, though no bass except in a corner; so all things considered, not an Altec that interests me except for maybe a small room and/or with a separate sub system.

edit: Note that this was for a very early pair and have no experience with newer versions, so this might not be a fair assessment of all 'C's.

I have the 288 8 ohm aluminum version redone at GPA but I would have to settle for 1803 horns.

You're welcome! what can I say? After 416A, -B, 515B, the early Ferrite had a tough act to follow. The 360 was too large for the high tuning, so all I could do was increase series resistance and stuff ports. It wasn't bad, just not optimal. An Onken alignment would probably be fine if designed with measured specs + any series resistance.

Thanks VOTT. They were done here in town at Vancouver Audio Speaker Clinic. The cones remained original. I asked them to pull the dust caps, clean the gaps the best they could [yes, I know], realign one of the coils, clean the surrounds and add some new goop. Once home I gave them some TLC to tidy them up a bit.

Glad to hear you were able to keep the original cones--looks like they did some nice work on the "spruce up". The only place I would trust for a full re-cone for my vintage Altecs (if they ever need it) is GPA. BTW, maybe I lightened your photo too much! Is this better?

I know a couple fellas "in the business" in that corner of the world, Vancouver Audio is a long and well trusted speaker repair center. They likely source their Altec related parts from GPA, or from the same source GPA does depending on the part, and their work is absolutely on par with GPA's. I've owned some of their work in the past, and if i lived west of the Rockies they'd pretty much be my exclusive speaker repair folks. East of the Rockies GPA is a no-brainer for Altec and Gauss rebuilds, even used to be able to talk them into some Emilar cone repairs a few years back.
